Los Angeles Fashion Council was founded in October 2011 and officially launched in January 2012.
Our mission is to elevate Los Angeles fashion design by creating a platform for presentation on local, national and international levels, as well as by providing education, funding and support.
We kicked off our programming with London Fashion Week in February 2012, where we held a pop up showroom. It was extremely well received, garnering coverage from Vogue, national newspapers and top tier blogs and we were joined by major buyers such as Harrods and ASOS. The show room also led to a major red carpet placement for one of our designers and our own boutique supported by ASOS Marketplace (now on it’s fifth season) which ultimately led to even more press, including US InStyle Magazine.
In October 2012 we launched the first of our “at home” programming, the Los Angeles Collections. Two days of intimate runway shows, industry lunches and seminars and an onsite showroom. Now heading into it’s fifth season, Collections press coverage has included LA Times, WWD, CA Apparel News, E!, The Style Network, Racked LA, Vogue Italia and scores of top bloggers from throughout Southern California.
Earlier this year we took a group of our designers to Mercedes Benz Fashion Week – Tokyo, where they participated in a group presentation and showroom at Shibuya Hikarie for international press and buyers.
We strongly believe the opportunity to present should be based on merit, not money, allowing Los Angeles to rival global fashion cities such as London by producing the most exciting and innovative designers with full support of their community. Whilst this model is the harder one to achieve, we believe it’s the way it should be in order to support our industry, which begins with these designers. Our designers show with us for never more than cost price.
Other initiatives are taking place in Los Angeles, where we are building an infrastructure and support network for the industry, including comprehensive databases, sponsorship and scholarship programs, and a council of designers (a mix of emerging and established) and an advisory board consisting of industry specialists.
In 2013 we launched Open Runway, a “pre-emerging”, open -mic style runway show wherein designers compete for a complimentary spot in our seasonal Collections. Our second season of Open Runway kicked off in July in partnership with W Los Angeles. Other projects have included pop-up shops and sample sales.
If you feel you have something to bring to our Council or Advisory Board or register your support as a member of the industry, to be we invite you to reach out to our Director, Kelsi Smith.
